Universiade World Student Games

It was really amazing to see our best Russian gymnasts competing in the Universiade World Student Games. They were actually looking very good, not to compare to other countries who did not send their main team members to these kind of events in preparation for the upcoming World Championships.

It upset me that the USA gymnastics team was not represented at all. I understand why and I know that the collegiate gymnastics rules differ from international rules. But, I also know that many great gymnasts competing at the college and world levels would be really competitive at Universiade. I competed twice at Universiade. They are my favorite tournaments! It was a good time of the season and exciting but with a relaxing atmosphere. Like a mini Olympics but without the pressure.

Here are a few of my favorite performances from this year’s Universiade. Enjoy!

Ksenia Afanasyeva (RUS) FX AA – 2013 Universiade Kazan – 15.00
This is a really beautiful floor routine! It’s what a floor routine should look like!

Hong Un Jong – Vault – 2013 Universiade EF – 15.125
Hong represented North Korea at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she won gold in the woman’s vault. I had no idea she could still do such difficult vaults!
